At some point in each of our lives we experience the need to let something go; maybe a habit, a job, or perhaps a certain way of thinking. Sometimes there is an experience that we need to mentally release, or even a relationship that is no longer serving us.
These situations can create the feeling of dead weight on our lives. Releasing dead weight is freeing, yet should be done with preparation. When you feel the need to free yourself from something that no longer serves you it could be that enough harm has already been done, therefore, releasing these situations or
experiences ought to be done carefully so that you are able to walk away without further damage.
Here are 4 steps to release dead weight from your life with careful preparation
1. Consider things that are weighing on you mentally, or spiritually. Make a list any habits, experiences, relationships or thought patterns that are no longer serving you or your life.
2. Ask yourself why you are carrying these burdens. Are you holding on out of Fear?
Insecurity? Perceived Obligation? List all of the reasons that come to mind.
3. Imagine your life free of this dead weight. What about your life would be different if you let it go? Describe the ways your life would change.
4. Start with your heaviest burden. Acknowledge the reasons why you have carried this around. Determine the action you must take to let it go. Can you free yourself by having a conversation with someone? Do you need to go within and simply visualize yourself no longer holding on to a certain experience? Maybe creating a new daily routine could help you release an old habit or old thought pattern. Make the decision, with 100% commitment, and Take Action Now!
A great way to release people, experiences or habits that are weighing you down is to mentally release them with meditation or prayer. I learned this powerful forgiveness routine from Patrick Freeman, of Freeman Yoga in Fullerton, CA and I have used this mental exercise many times to gain freedom from situations that are no longer serving me:
Visualize the person, experience, or habit that causes feelings of hurt or any negative
emotions and surround this person, experience or habit with divine light.
Recite for 1 minute, mentally or out loud with strong intention: ‘Lord, fill (the
person, experience, habit etc.) with Peace & Harmony, Peace & Harmony, Peace &
Harmony…’ Hold a clear vision, surrounded by divine light.
Free Yourself now by visualizing yourself in a divine light and with strong intention,
recite mentally or out loud for 15 seconds: ‘Lord, fill Me with Peace & Harmony,
Peace & Harmony, Peace & Harmony…’
Release the dead weight in your life and acknowledge the strength you have gained from these experiences. It has been said in various ways that success in life is preceded by struggle, and while I believe that this is true, I also believe it is important to know when and how to let things go when they are no longer serving you. The key to freedom is in your hands; get clear on what you no longer wish to carry, and with care and strong intention, Let It Go.
